Hubo Initia Hasselt is er niet in geslaagd zich te kwalificeren voor de groepsfase van de EHF Cup. De Belgen wonnen hun terugwedstrijd tegen het Spaanse Helvetia Anaitasuna, maar het was niet genoeg om door te gaan naar de volgende ronde. De 20-28 nederlaag in de heenwedstrijd deed de Belgen uiteindelijk de das om.
Hasselt begon goed aan de wedstrijd en kwam zelfs op een 9-13 voorsprong. Even leek er een sensatie in de lucht te hangen. De sterke doelman Vanbrabant zorgde er telkens voor de Hasselt een vier punten voorsprong kon behouden. Vlak voor rust deden de Spanjaarden nog wel wat terug maar Hasselt ging met een comfortabele 13-16 rusten.
In de tweede helft wilden de Spanjaarden de achterstand snel goed maken, zodat Hasselt niet meer in een wonder zou geloven. Na 44 minuten stond het ook 20-20 en toen bleek dat het goedmaken van de acht doelpunten uit de heenwedstrijd wel erg lastig zou worden.
Toch bleef Hasselt vechten voor de overwinning en dat lukte ook. Nadat Jackers de 24-26 binnenschoot kwam de overwinning niet meer in gevaar. Het Europa Cup avontuur zat er weliswaar op, toch kunnen de Belgen met opgeheven hoofd het toneel verlaten.
