In een hoog tempo greep Jong Oranje direct de leiding. Tegen de soms krachteloze Japanners prikte hoekspeelster Sabine Vollebregt drie keer raak (5-1). Ook Quintus-maatjes Van Zijl en Haggerty waren op schot. Cirkelspeelster Haggerty, die een contract heeft getekend bij het Duitse HSG Bad Wildungen Vipers, kon meermaals rekenen op sierlijke passjes van spelverdeelster Larissa Nusser.
Rommelige fase
Via 13-7 ging Nederland rusten met een 17-10 voorsprong, waarbij het spel van beide landen soms slordig was. Na de thee sloop Japan ondanks een hattrick van schutter Anouk Zwinkels dichterbij (21-18). De ingevallen Ilya Belgareh en Anouk Nieuwenweg haalden Oranje in een rommelige fase uit een dipje. De laatste actie van de wedstrijd kwam op naam van de ingevallen doelvrouw Mandy Hoogenboom, die een Japans schot uit de hoek plukte.
Het vertoonde spel in het tweede bedrijf miste schwung, maar de twee punten kwamen geen moment in gevaar. Door de winst eindigt Nederland achter Rusland en Zweden in poule D. Daarmee ontwijken Vaassen en zijn meiden in de hoofdronde de leider van groep C. Oranje treft in de achtste finale de verliezer van het duel tussen Duitsland en Roemenië.
