In de conferentiezaal in Bulgarije mocht een handjevol dames zich bewijzen tegenover Groener en Portengen. In aanloop naar Rio moeten zeven dames, van de 21-koppige selectie, afvallen. Op een aantal posities is het dringen geblazen.
De shirts voor de opbouwrij tijdens de Olympische Spelen lijken al bijna gedrukt. De WK-sterren die woensdagavond ontbraken in het Oostblokland mogen zich op gaan maken voor de trip naar Brazilië. Voor een jongeling als Inger Smits komt Rio 2016 te vroeg. Smaakmakers Abbingh en Polman zijn de sleutelfiguren van Oranje.
Rentree Jankovic
Jasmina Jankovic zorgt met haar terugkeer voor een luxeprobleem voor Groener. Waar in Denemarken Wester, absolute nummer één, en Van der Wal het doel van Nederland verdedigden, probeert Jankovic haar huid zo duur mogelijk te verkopen. De doelvrouw van TuS Metzingen moest vlak voor het Wereld Kampioenschap afhaken met een blessure. Tegen Bulgarije maakte Jankovic haar officiële rentree.
Ook over de rechterhoekpositie lijkt Groener z’n hoofd nog even te kunnen breken. Om de in vorm verkerende Malestein kan de hoofdcoach niet heen, terwijl Bont en Luciano woensdagavond beide zeer trefzeker waren: respectievelijk zes om acht treffers. Waar Bont op het fantastische WK te bewonderen was, leek in 2016 de voorkeur uit te gaan naar de rappe oud-speelster van Quintus.
Reservepositie
De Olympische selectie van de Oranjedames zal bestaan uit veertien speelsters, plus een reserve. Dat is één speelster minder dan op het WK. Wanneer Groener ervoor kiest met de WK-selectie naar Zuid-Amerika af te reizen, zal één vaste waarde het toernooi vanaf de tribune moeten aanschouwen. Zal de twijfelachtige eer dan zijn voor mandekker Kramer? Of is de multi-functionele opbouwster Knippenborgh niet specialistisch genoeg?
Op 27 juni start de Olympische selectie de voorbereiding op de Olympische Spelen in Rio de Janeiro. Aanstaande zaterdag speelt Oranje een EK-kwalificatiewedstrijd in Den Bosch. De wedstrijd is uitverkocht.
