KRAS/Volendam-trainer Mark Schmetz (39) heeft dit weekend zijn comeback gemaakt bij de club waar hij in 2005 de EHF-Cup mee won, TuSEM Essen. De club uit het Ruhrgebied komt tegenwoordig uit in de Tweede Bundesliga.
Door de vele langdurige blessures bij Essen werd de coach in december al gebeld om zijn oude club te helpen, toen ging dat echter niet. Deze week werd Schmetz, die in 2012 zijn carrière beëindigde, opnieuw gevraagd en aangezien hij geen verplichtingen had met zijn club KRAS/Volendam kon de oud-bondscoach zijn schoenen weer uit de kast halen.
”Het was een ongelofelijk gevoel om hier weer eens te mogen spelen. Ik heb hier toch zes jaar gespeeld en een super tijd gehad. Ik ben blij dat ik het team en de club helpen kon” aldus Schmetz tegenover handball-world.com.
TuSEM Essen won de wedstrijd van het hoog geplaatste ASV Hamm-Westfalen, pikant genoeg ook een ex-club van Schmetz, met 33-24. Schmetz maakte drie doelpunten.
