Willem-Jan was als speler actief bij onder meer HMS Achilles, Celeritas, Nijenrodes en Auto Smeeing/BDC. De laatste drie seizoenen was hij trainer/coach bij de dames van Auto Smeeing/BDC dat zeer verdienstelijk uitkwam in de hoofdklasse.
Kees Boomhouwer stapte kort geleden nog op bij de Utrechtse club. In de tussentijd zijn de trainingen opgevangen door Hennie van der Vaart.
