“Voetbal moet spannend, eerlijk en boeiend blijven. Ik zie het als een uitdaging om die ontwikkeling in de gaten te houden en te kijken welke regels er dan nodig zijn. Kijk nou eens hoe er de laatste tijd gespeeld wordt. Voetbal is een soort handbal geworden, waarbij elf mensen hun ‘zestienmetergebied’ staan te verdedigen. Dan kun je buitenspel helemaal afschaffen”.
Of de uitspraak van Van Basten een compliment is naar het handbal is onbekend.
